WordCamp Toronto 2008

by Lyndon on October 6, 2008

If you weren’t there, you missed out. There was so much to learn, to discover, people to meet. My brain has been on overdrive since I left. I have all these new ideas, plugins that I want to try out and things I want to do before next year.

I also have the worst luck with memory cards. Another one got corrupted on me!! I salvaged a few pictures of the people that presented. But most of the shots of the developers, bloggers and one person who was knitting during the whole thing are gone.

1.Mathieu Yuill, 2.WordCamp Swag, 3.Melissa Feeney, 4.Corner Stage Blogger, 5.Rannie Turingan, 6. Live Blogging.  I have a few more pictures you can see on my photo page or posted on Flickr.

Some key points learned during the weekend.

  • WordPress 2.7 is going to seriously kick ass
  • A lot of people use Twitter and have iPhones (I have neither)
  • The room was made up of Live Bloggers and Photographers (Some did both)
  • Oldest person there was 63 and the youngest 15
  • The Scarborough RT system sucks!!
  • It’s the purple mic (You had to be there to get that)
  • I got upstaged by my own business card
  • I found even more plugins that I want to use :)
  • They need to save Matt Mullenweg for the end of Wordcamps. It’s hard for everyone to present after him.

Overall, I’d say the event was a great success. I know that I’m a bit light on the details. But it’s just too much for one person to try to cover. If you’re using WordPress and they’re holding an event like this near you, do yourself a favor and just go.

Later…

Upstaged by your own business card? Explain! I was actually impressed by all the Moo cards people had there. I’m totally going to order myself a package of them now.

Funniest thing ever, I was sitting behind the guy in picture #6 and he was actually debugging a Django application for the entire morning of the Saturday! It was hilarious!

Well, I would have gone to this thing if you hadn’t mentioned it at the last minute and I had known in advance. I might even have gone WITH you.

@ Malcolm - A lot of people had the moo cards. But I decided to design my own, using a photo montage. Let’s just say, everyone thought the card was more interesting than me :)
All this time I thought he was blogging. Guess I should have taken a peek at his screen.

@ Jafer - REALLY!! Considering I wrote about going in August when I got my ticket, then again in the beginning of September and a week before the event. Plus I was running banner ads up till the Thursday they stopped selling tickets to it as well. I guess I didn’t tell you enough ;)

@ Saint2 - It was!!

@ Michael - I am!!

@ SandyCarlson - It’s so true!!

@ Ivanhoe - The funny thing with the new plugins, they’re not ones you’ll notice. It’s more stuff to keep the site running smoothly.

You have to remember that I’m old, so just because I may have read it before doesn’t mean that it stuck in my head. I barely remember to go to half the appointments I have because I either forget about them or I remember to put them into my calendar but on the day that they happen, I say, “I don’t feel like it”.

@ Jafer - Fine, when the next one happens. I’m going to bug you for a month straight, until you sign up or get your tickets.
